Rene and Moise
It is with profound sadness that we share with you the tragic loss of two of the most dedicated and longstanding WCS Congo team members, René Rufin Aleba and Moïse Zoniaba. Several of the current staff here in Congo have worked together since WCS first arrived in the country in the early 1990s, and Moïse and René were two such employees. For these colleagues and others, the loss of two such close friends will be very keenly felt.
Our work in Congo is completely reliant on teamwork. René and Moïse played vital roles in this team, helping to realize the conservation goals of WCS in the Republic of Congo. Their contributions, in Logistics and Human Resource management, were vital, and central to the functioning of the organization. René was at the forefront of the WCS-Congo Program’s operations, and was always available, no matter what time of day or night, to help getting things done logistically. Excellent logistics have been the backbone and key to much success of the WCS Congo program, and Rene was always ready to face any challenge with an excellent sense of humor. Moïse was the WCS Congo program legal advisor, having begun his career as a conservation educator. Moise had a quiet and strong demeanor and impressive intellect, gifts that he used to help steer the strategic and political development of the Program. Management and administrative systems that were first developed by Moïse still form the backbone of many of our conservation projects to this day.
René and Moïse worked with passion, and always strived to assist everyone at WCS and to ensure that the organization’s work as a whole ran smoothly. They are the faces of conservation that are seldom in the limelight, but are so incredibly important to getting things done. We will all truly miss these two passionate, dedicated, kind and friendly people.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous partageons avec vous la perte tragique de deux agents du Programme WCS-Congo, René Rufin Aleba et Moïse Zoniaba. De nombreux employés travaillent ensemble pour le compte de WCS, ici au Congo, depuis le début des années 1990. Moïse et René ont font partie de ceux-là. Pour ces collègues et pour d’autres, la perte de ces deux proches sera très vivement ressentie.
Notre travail au Congo dépend complètement du travail d’équipe. René et Moïse ont joué un rôle vital dans cette équipe, en aidant à réaliser les objectifs de conservation poursuivis par WCS en République du Congo. Leurs contributions, en logistique et en gestion des ressources humaines, ont été vitales et indispensables au fonctionnement de l’organisme. René a joué un rôle de premier plan dans les activités du Programme WCS-Congo. Il se rendait toujours disponibles, peu importe l’heure – de jour comme de nuit – pour essayer d’organiser la logistique. L’excellence des opérations logistiques a été la colonne vertébrale et la clé de la réussite du Programme WCS-Congo, et René – mû par un excellent sens de l’humour – a toujours été à la hauteur de tous les défis.
Moïse a été le Conseiller Juridique du Programme WCS-Congo et a commencé sa carrière au sein du Programme en tant qu’éducateur à la conservation. Moïse avait un comportement plutôt calme, avec une forte personnalité et une intelligence impressionnante, des talents qu’il a utilisé pour guider le développement stratégique et politique du Programme. La gestion et les systèmes administratifs qui ont été mis en place, au départ, par Moïse forment encore, jusqu’à ce jour, la colonne vertébrale de beaucoup de nos projets.
René et Moïse ont travaillé avec passion et se sont efforcés de toujours assister tout le monde au niveau de WCS, en s’assurant que le travail au sein de l’organisme marche à merveilles. L’un et l’autre constituent de rares visages qui, en conservation, rayonnent sous les projecteurs, et ont été tellement importants dans l’accomplissement de diverses tâches. Ces deux personnes passionnées, dévouées, altruistes et amicales nous manqueront vraiment.

”Rene was a remarkable colleague - he was able to achieve things which made my life so much easier. He worked very hard to support the remote projects in northern Congo and I doubt without his hard work we would have been able to function effectively. During my time in Congo (2004-2007) he changed how Lac Tele functioned - he managed to get our new Landcruiser on a boat up the river with our new generator inside and 600 litres of diesel. Suddenly, our project came alive - we could power computers, rely on a car to get us into Impfondo and watch Champions League football in the evening! Rene was always very calm and helpful and I was glad that he was the last person I saw from WCS when I left Congo. I am sure he leaves many good memories with many colleagues, friends and family. - Hugo Rainey

”I had the opportunity to work with Rene throughout his entire career with WCS-Congo. During the years that he handled logistics for WCS, he grew considerably in his role, and eventually was the go-to guy for pretty much anything from purchasing to emergency last-minute visas to late-night airport pickups. Any day of the week, any time of day, if someone needed Rene, he was there, always with a smile on his face and a solution to the problem at hand. He will be sorely missed, not only for his ability to get things done, but also as a friend to share a Guinness at the end of a long day. - Bryan Curran

”Moïse a commencé à travailler comme chef de Personnel de PROGEPP, Kabo pendant les années 1992 – 1998. Pendant ces années il avait beaucoup travaillé avec les personnels de Bomassa. A Brazzaville, quand il a commencé a travailler comme conseiller juridique pour WCS, il est venu a Bomassa plusieurs foire pour être Directeur par intérim. Pour tout les travailleurs ici a Bomassa il été pas juste une collègue, il a été une grand ami. Il est venez souvent résoudre les problèmes du personnel WCS Bomassa. Ca nous manque quelqu’un comme Moise, il a été pour tout le monde. – Personnel WCS, Bomassa

”Moise was the 'fire-fighter'. Whenever there was a problem which no one else could resolve, he would bring some calm and resolution to the situation. The Lac Tele Project benefited enormously from his hard work and strong debating skills: he prevented problems getting out of hand and made a great contribution to the stability of the project. His presence and calm nature was greatly appreciated by the Lac Tele team up in Epena. He made a very valuable contribution to how all the WCS Congo projects functioned by standardising recruitment and employment - a very important part of management! His legacy for WCS is that it made us more professional and therefore more effective in achieving our conservation goals. Moise will be greatly missed. - Hugo Rainey
