Mbeli bai, a 13 hectare large swampy forest clearing provides an un-obscured ‘window’ for observers to study forest wildlife that are attracted to the natural clearing by mineral rich deposits and an opportunity for social gatherings. Studies carried out at the bai have provided fascinating insights into the social behavior of elusive forest species such as forest elephants, western lowland gorillas and sitatunga. The bai also offers a rare opportunity to photograph forest wildlife out in an open area.
